In a beautiful mansion of the nineteenth century, the museum houses the very rich collections of a family of merchants from the Marseille bourgeoisie, brought to its peak after 1848.
It was in 1919 that Marie Grobet, née Labadié, gave the City of Marseille the beautiful mansion of her family and all the collections it housed, built up for several decades. The museum presents a varied and unexpected collection of works that seduce and amaze with their techniques, materials and delicacy.
The collections of the Grobet-Labadié Museum admirably illustrate the artistic eclecticism of a family of "enlightened" amateurs of that time. They reflect the tastes of a refined bourgeois society, seduced by all forms of art and constitute sets of works of prime importance: reception pieces and furniture of theXVIII century, floors of life and paintings, sculptures, ceramics, furniture, tapestries, collection of musical instruments, stained glass windows ...
If theXVIII century occupies a privileged place within the collections with in particular the Salon Louis XV, the high Middle Ages, the Renaissance and theXIX century remain no less represented.
The Grobet-Labadié Museum offers an immersive dive into the history of taste at the beginning of theXX century.
It embodies an aesthetic of thenineteenth century of which we are the heirs, based on an encyclopedic vision of a nascent art history. The people of Marseille and lovers of art and heritage particularly appreciate it because it is indisputably in Marseille what the Frick Collection is in New York, the Wallace Collection in London and the Jacquemard-André Museum in Paris.
