Art in a former mansion !
Cantini Museum is located near the Place of the Prefecture, to the 19 rue Grignan, in a beautiful mansion OM of the 17th century.
It was long the property of the family of Montgrand, but it takes its name from the famous Mason Jules Cantini, who took part in the construction of many civil and religious buildings in Marseille under the Second Empire, and great lover of art, originally the facility. Purchaser of the House in 1888, does gift to the municipality in 1916 so as to showcase for the art of the period.
It is as well as the Cantini Museum houses since a public modern art collection covering the period 1900 to 1960; 1960s to today being, however, dealt with the MAC (Museum of contemporary art in Marseille).
Therefore, you will need to visit both! ... the MAC lying near the Borely Museum and Park, you will also enjoy to discover the Museum of Decorative Arts of the Faence and fashion.
We'll meet at the Cantini Museum, beautiful sequences around Fauvism (André Derain, Charles Camoin, Emile Othon Friesz, Alfred Lombard), first experiments cubists (Raoul Dufy, Albert Gleizes) and different post-Cubist currents or purists of the 1920-1940s (Amédée Ozenfant, Fernand Léger, Le Corbusier, Laure Garcin, Jacques Villon).
