The fort St. John is a beautiful monument historic, beautifully situated at the entrance to the old Port of Marseille, and which has been highlighted with the construction of the MuCEM for 2013, the year or Marseille was the capital European of the culture. It also acts as a meeting point between the city and the Museum, by a game of two gateways (truly amazing technical and aesthetic, a stroke of black concrete vault without guy wires, using a new type of concrete including the pr material are close to steel), which lead you MuCEM in Fort Saint Jean, and the Fort Saint Jean in the historic "the basket".
So come and get lost in the ramparts and the casemates of the fort, its maze of courses and places, its arcades, its vaulted rooms, its hanging gardens and its panoramic views of Marseille and the Mediterranean. Climb the Tower of King René, and make a course in "the Mediterranean garden". The Fort St. John lends itself particularly to the Boardwalk. Made into a family, it's fun for the kids.
For the record, the fort St. John owes its name to the commanderie of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem established around the 12th century on this spur, extending the St. Lawrence Hill, and watching the entrance to the old Port of Marseille. It's in the middle of the fifteenth century that the powerful Square Tower is built by King René to keep the past from the port. The round tower of the Lantern was built in 1664. The construction of the fort, required by Louis XIV, is performed from 1668 to 1671 by the was Knight after expropriation of the Hospitallers and many houses. And on the instructions of Vauban, is dug in 1679 a wide gap to isolate the city.
During the French revolution, it serves as a prison during the second world war, the Germans use deposit ammunition and release, an explosion will damage some of the buildings....
With the MuCEM, the Fort St. John became a place of life. Be aware that many meetings, discussions, screenings, performances are also expected throughout the ' year at MuCEM.
