The Calanque de Port Miou, which means in Provençal "best port" is a natural shelter for ships. There are about 500 at anchor during the year.
It's the only cove accessible by car. To reach it from Cassis, follow the calanques road to the parking lot of the peninsula.
The site is beautiful, like a Provençal fjord with several freshwater springs plunging into turquoise water, all surrounded by a magnificent pine forest. This former limestone quarry, used in particular for the Suez Canal, was operated from 1901 to 1982; it is separated from the cassis harbour by the peninsula.
The peninsula is very popular with tourists and has many restaurants. The contrast is striking between the white limestone of the peninsula and the ochre of the cliffs. The cove of Port Miou does not have a beach, but it is the starting point of many hikes in the massif of coves. One of the hiking trails, the GR 98, travels the Coves of Marseille in six to eight hours of walking depending on the levels.
Small curiosity: the "blower' hole." It is a geological curiosity, a fault in the rock originating in the water and ending at the top of the rock by a very small hole. The waves compress the air in this natural conduit that escapes through the top emitting strange sounds. That can surprise unsophisticated visitors!
