THE VASARELY FOUNDATION and its 44 monumental works, welcomes you to the heart of this lumino-kinetic building and guides you through the discovery of the work of Victor Vasarely. Let yourself be transported by the Architectural integrations. Disturbing universe of illusion where shapes, colours and lines are superimposed, mixed, reverse, leading children, as well as adults, into games of playful discoveries.

VICTOR VASARELY is a very singular visual artist in the history of twentieth-century art. Gaining notoriety during his lifetime, he distinguished himself in contemporary art by creating a new trend: optical art. His work is part of a great coherence, from the evolution of his graphic art to his determination to promote a social art, accessible to all.

VASARELY PLASTIC ARTIST

VICTOR VASARELY is a very singular visual artist in the history of twentieth-century art. Gaining notoriety during his lifetime, he distinguished himself in contemporary art by creating a new trend: optical art. His work is part of a great coherence, from the evolution of his graphic art to his determination to promote a social art, accessible to all.

A tour and cultural mediation allow visitors to discover or rediscover the Master's visual universe, from his beginnings as a graphic designer to the realization of his monumental integrations and his utopian project of the "polychrome city of happiness".
This didactic presentation, with nearly 250 works and original documents, in an adapted scenography, integrates the fundamental elements of the project of the French visual artist of Hungarian origin (Pécs 1906 – Paris 1997).
On this occasion, a room called "Lucien Arkas" will be devoted to the exhibition of twelve works by this collector who is passionate about the work of Victor Vasarely.

MONUMENTAL INTEGRATIONS

Opened in 1976, the Vasarely Foundation bears witness to and illustrates the artist's experimental research. His desire to develop a universal and social artistic policy led Victor Vasarely to integrate art directly into everyday life, to the point of integrating it organically into architecture: he uses geometry by associating shapes and colors to give the illusion of space, volume and movement.

"To combat visual nuisance and create the polychrome city of happiness".

Thus, the 42 works, monumental integrations 5 meters wide by 8 meters high are one with the walls of the museum.
The exhibition offers an immersion in the world of Vasarely's geometric abstraction, in the optical experiments and games of his creations, where the audience is itself an actor in the visual effects.
In order to be close to Nature and to keep it simple, Vasarely only uses simple geometric shapes (the round, the square, the hexagon, the cube, etc.) and bold colours laid in flat areas. Then, these forms undergo dynamics (stretching, repetition, gradual displacement) and provoke the animation of the surface, the sensation of volume, movement and space, through the play of optical effects.
