The gare Saint-Charles in Marseille was built in 1848 by the engineer Gustave Desplaces on the edge of a vast plateau which dominates the town center.
It communicates with the City Center by a monumental staircase of 104 markets, decorated with many sculptures including representing maritime and commercial activity of the city of Marseille with the Colonies.
These sculptures include:
- Louis Botinelly sculptures representing on both sides of the stairs 'colonies of Africa' and the 'colonies of Asia'.
Each of these features is a woman lying on a bench, accompanied by two children.
-bronze sculptures carved by Henri Raybaud representing products of Provence: the harvest, flowers, hunting, the harvest, fruit and fishing.
-on the South face of the 2 huge towers, sculptures ofAuguste Carli. They represent "the door of the East" and "Greek Marseille colony" with a female allegory. Henri Martin sculpted the other sides of the pylon, with depictions of the coat of arms of a city: Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Nice, Lyon, Paris.
-the "lion and the child" carved by Ary Bitter on part of the stairs with the inscriptions "the Sun and the sea" and "the world is energy".
She has known since the early 2000s, many facilities and has been considerably enlarged with "Honnorat Hall" and its imposing exterior white colonnade which prolongs the old façade.
Arrive by train to Marseille is a change of scenery! It's pretty stunning, because once you get out in front of the station, it dominates the town and can be seen our Lady of the guard who watches.
Oh, this is it, he only stayed more to discover its secrets!
