Marseille's City Hall is located on the Old Port, marking a city facing the Mediterranean Sea!
Inspired by the Genoese palaces of the time, it was built in the mid-17th century on the plans of Mathieu Portal and Gaspard Puget (brother of
Pierre Puget).
It consists of two pavilions separated by a street, the Puget Pavilion on theport side, and the Bargemon Pavilion on its rear.
And has two peculiarities:
- The Puget Pavilion does not have a staircase from the ground floor to the 1st floor. To get to the 1st floor, you have to go through the building behind the Town Hall, i.e. the Bargemon Pavilion, the two buildings being connected by a bridge, which was first made of wood, then in stone thanks to the remarkable work (1782 to 1786) of architect Esprit Joseph Brun.
At the time, it was intended to reserve the ground floor exclusively for the "lodge" of the merchants, thus separating it completely from the municipal authority. That's why the street separating the two buildings is called "the street of the lodge".
- The Puget Pavilion has on its main façade two symmetrical wings topped with triangular pediments and, on the first floor, a large balcony supported by columns and pilasters crowned with acanthes, and windows themselves covered with triangular pediments.
The aim was to
to create
a pageantry façade , turned towards the sea, in order to stage
municipal authority and to counterbalance the strong architecture of
The Arsenal of Galleys representative of the royal authority, located on the
opposite bank.
Finally, on at least two occasions, the Town Hall could have disappeared:
- During the French revolution, suspected of having served as a den for the federalists, it narrowly escaped demolition.
- It was also one of the few buildings to have survived the destruction of the district in 1943, under German occupation.
On April 30, 1948, it was declared a historic monument.
The office of the Mayor and his 1st deputy are located on the first floor of City Hall. On the other hand, the city council chamber, the work and meeting rooms are now installed in the Espace Villeneuve-Bargemon, built underground, nearby.
