The Alcazar is a former vaudeville Hall, today regional municipal library open to the public, and located on the courses Belsunce, near the famous Canebière.
Plenty of public reading, study, research and conservation of the heritage collections, this library is also an active place of cultural development, facilitating access to information, education, culture and recreation for all public. Participating in the Mediterranean Pole associated with the National Library of France, head of network and logistics base of the libraries in the city, it is the preferred tool of cooperation for professionals in the region with direct access to the collections scanned.
It covers 18 000 square meters divided into two buildings. Public access premises extend over four levels around a large "indoor Street". The whole building is designed according to a will of transparency and fluidity, especially by the use of translucent facades, panoramic elevators and interior spaces open and illuminated by natural light. Thus, we can see from outside what is happening inside. This bias architectural corresponds to the desire to involve the library in the life of the neighborhood and the city. The second building, connected to the first by two glass bridge, contains stores and internal services. The Alcazar features include a 300-seat basement Conference room.
Collections are distributed within thematic departments according to four large areas: arts, science and technology, youth and civilization. Each one combines all types of media. Some departments are areas of specific expertise: the Department read otherwise devoted to disabilities (there are documents in brailles, tactile books, audio books, specific hardware, etc.) and island books, Center resources for children's books.
